Installing Malayalam on Mandriva Spring 2008 GNU/Linux

I tried installing Malayalam on Mandriva Spring 2008. It turned out to be easy.

Step 1 : Install Mandriva ;)

Step 2 : Log in and update your system from Menu->Tools->System Tools->Configure your Computer

Step 3 : From from Menu->Tools->System Tools->Configure your Computer choose 'install & Remove Software '

Step 4 : There are two drop down lists on the top left , choose 'All' in both .

Step 5: search for scim-tables-ml and select it

Step 6: Accept the dependencies. It will also ask you to choose from scim-, scim-bridge, and skim.I chose SKIM.

Step 7 : Click on Apply .

Step 8 : After software finishes installation, search for scim-qtimm Or scim-gtk and select it

Step 9 : Accept the dependencies , click on apply and wait for software install to complete.

Step 10 : Download and install latest Meera and Rachana from http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/smc/fonts/malayalam-fonts-04/ . Installing involves right clicking on the file and choosing actions->install

Step 11: open a console . become root user by typing 'su' (without quotes ) , and then typing in your admin password when prompted.

Step 12 : Run the following commands one by one

echo 'GTK_IM_MODULE=scim' >> /etc/sysconfig/i18n
echo 'XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"' >> /etc/sysconfig/i18n
echo 'QT_IM_MODULE=scim' >> /etc/sysconfig/i18n
echo 'XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM' >> /etc/sysconfig/i18n

Step 13: Reboot your system

Step 14: Log in . There should be a keyboard icon on the taskbar . You can click on it and choose your input method

Step 15: Send mails to friends and tell them that GNU is awesome.


Hitch number 1 : Firefox rendering is shit. libpango is v1.20 . How do i fix this ?
Hitch number 2 : Open office doesnt have ml language pack. :(

Another one of M$ s dirty tactics ..

Microsoft has roped in Mammootty to launch their e-literacy ('illiteracy') program in Kerala as reported by IANS on AOL. This has serious repercussions even though the perception from a non techie view point might differ and dismiss it as a minor issue in the face of inflation and other issues faced by the people of Kerala. This is just like Coke's bid for Mammootty's endorsement. He refused it then , as several environmental groups were calling for the soft drink's boycott. It was a great gesture since he is thought of as an intelligent man with social responsibility.

He has been appointed as the brand ambassador for Akshaya . As per the state IT policy Akshaya's aim is ‘making technology and e-government services accessible to common man’ . By all logical conclusions , FOSS is the only way to implement this without the government being held at the mercy of a private organization like Microsoft. The economic benefits and the quality of FOSS itself makes it the number one choice. FOSS is free for everyone to use, anyone can modify it and anyone can distribute it. FOSS is community owned. The Govt of Kerala has acted sensibly by recommending FOSS for satisfying our IT needs .

At this stage Mammooty's endorsement of Microsoft and its products is not only against the logic , it is against the IT policy that envisioned a program like Akshaya. I would like to believe that he was misinformed or ill informed , and that this is a typical Microsoft style manipulation of the IT scene in Kerala. They have already been kicked out from schools, colleges and government institutions. This is just a dirty trick to make a come back through the back door.

I don't have anything against private companies using Microsoft technologies for their businesses. Its totally acceptable - they have the freedom to choose their road . But when it comes to software for everyone , for the society and for governance , non-free closed source software made by one company alone , who is not trusted in its originating nation and in other developed nations will be a bad , idiotic choice.

I hope that Mammootty reads the open letter posted by FOSS communities in India and starts thinking about his involvement with Microsoft. I believe that an artist has a certain responsibility to his audience that transcends his dedication to his work alone. If he is a thinking man ,I am sure that he will come to a logical conclusion and drop his e-literacy(illiteracy) program with Microsoft .

An Unofficial report of GNU Linux install fest

The GNU/Linux installfest at Kanakakkunnu on April 12th was a huge success. In spite of our inexperience and other glitches , it went reasonably well, drawing public in large numbers. We ended up having 40 installations, around 50 home install requests and almost 350 install media distribution. This goes on to show how far dedication alone can lead us.

The idea for the install fest was conceived by Anoop Jacob Thomas and was soon taken up by the GLUG members. Zyxware served as our main planning center and Anoop John and Joju from Zyxware played key roles in assuring its success. FSF/SPACE had already given us their support and turned up at the installfest to help. CDAC showed support by sending in a box of BOSS media to be given away and a person to show it off. We also had people from IIITMK showing off open Solaris. The rest of the LUG volunteers had students from various colleges (Mar Baselios , Barton Hill , SCT ) , software engineers , engineers from VSSC etc.

I don't intend to describe the events that led up to the installfest. The following is an account of the evening before and the day of the installfest as seen by me. I apologize if i leave anyone/anything out. Do correct me.

On Friday , the evening before the install fest, the hardware were to be brought to Zyxware . Anoop Jacob Thomas and Anand Raj brought in their cars and Zyxware donated their Omni for the purposes. Syam and Visakh also brought their cars to serve as transportation.

We had around 12+ computers and other hardware to go with it, all donated by volunteers . I don't have the exact count. While those were being brought in , the rest ( Rajiv, Manuel and others) were busy installing games to be demoed and installations to be shown off. Compiz fusion was to be a great attraction so we couldn't afford glitches. We catalogued the stuff being brought in and then we started to move the systems to the venue by around 1:30.

All four cars were loaded up and driven over ( convoy style, complete with flashing indicators ) to the venue. While the floor plan was being laid out , Rajiv and me rigged the gaming computers and LAN. The rest re arranged the tables and hooked up power strips and the computers. We finished by around 3:30 . Prasad and Rajiv tested the gaming rig while the rest chalked up plans for the next day.

We left soon after. Me , Rajiv , Manuel , Joju and Prasad stayed at Zyxware while the rest went of to their homes. I woke up at about 7:30 and reached kanakakkunnu by around 8 . Anoop Jacob Thomas and Anand Raj had already gone off for UPSs and other stuff. I found Arjun Sanal and Anil on the premises. I went inside and started double checking things . Prathap , Mani , Srinath ,Rajiv Manuel and the rest started showing up and our t shirts had came in ( many thanks to Anand Raj for staying late sorting through some 375 packages at the courier office ) and glug volunteers in black were running around setting up stuff. At about 9 , Dr V Sasi Kumar came in. Me and prathap went off to attend the inaugural ceremony and speech by Dr V Sasi Kumar. Chandrettan wandered in after sometime and he stayed to listen to the speech.

After the inaugural speech , we went back to the hall to help setting up things. Rajiv recognized Mr.Amarnath Raja ( CEO Inapp ) walking around . I went and introduced myself and told him about the activities that we planned for the day. Chandrettan also came in and introduced himself. Dr V Sasi Kumar was also out looking at the arrangements. I left them chatting to each other.

Our first install request came in some time between 8:30 and 9. An 8 year old AMDK5 ( i think ) . A few minutes after 10:30 people started trickling in with computers and laptops. Ajay and team from IIITMK also arrived with opensolaris and we gave them a table. CDAC's BOSS install media and a person from CDAC had also arrived for demo ing it. I think Joju and Manuel took care of the projector and stuff. We soon had "elephant's dream" running on the projector with people watching.

Things started getting hectic. FSF people ( Jamesettan , Vimal , George and others ) and the team from GEC Barton hill had arrived. Computers were being brought in and people were milling around all the time. We had people asking for specific distros , mainly Fedora and Ubuntu . We also got laptops pre installed with Vista to be 'liberated'. People were very patient and had no problems when a few installations were held for sometime.The BOSS media were disappearing at a fast pace and the ubuntu pressed discs were in great demand. Even the 64 bit ones were taken.

93.5 S FM was there to cover it and i think we made use of the opportunity to the maximum. Anoop , me , Jamesettan talked to them. They wanted two more people to talk to , but i do not know whether they got them or not. Award winning actor Mr Suresh Gopi was there to get GNU/Linux installed on his VAIO . He was fascinated with the open source movie "Elephant's Dream" and was asking about the ownership and patents related to it. We told him that it was all community owned , even the art work in the movie. He was pretty impressed. We thank him for gracing the occassion with his presence.

Prathap provided snacks for GLUG volunteers and people were only too happy

The crowd thinned a bit after that, but we had a steady flow coming in , thanks to the excellent media coverage. There were people who came in the morning and came back with their computers to get FOSS installed. People also wanted installation media to share with friends. We started copying CDs from the ISO images we had ( courtesy Zyxware). We charged the cost of the install media as fee , which people thought was justified. They waited patiently for the media to be written out and generally were inquisitive about free software and its usage. Children were the most inquisitive users, exploring the games thoroughly. We had a child asking about some options to be passed at boot time ( ?? ) ! we all were surprised.

Towards the end of the day , we had two installation held up due to multiple power failures. But the owners waited patiently and thanked us profusely. All of us were exhausted, but then , we all felt that we had done something useful to the society as a whole. We served the General Public for whom free software exists.

We wound up , powered down systems , cracked jokes and returned to Zyxware with happy , bouncing hearts. All systems were cleared by around 1:30 am Sunday and we all had good long sleeps.

Looking back , we were totally unprepared to handle the crowd and we could have done with more planning. But we managed to pull it off even then. That , is the spirit of free software, free libre , that drives each one of us.

KDE Apps - Part One

This is the first of a series of articles which will introduce KDE as i see it. Now why a series of articles on KDE apps ? Because KDE is one of the sanest desktop environments i have used. And it works reasonably well on my pIII 800Mhz and my AMD Athlon XP 2800+ . No flame wars about KDE/GNOME/XFCE goodness ok ?

Well I am starting with Text editors. One of the most basic applications anyone ever wanted. Here are my picks of the lot offered by KDE.(People who swear by emacs, please forgive . I make no mention of it here )

KEdit is my fav. Its what i wished for. No bells and whistles . Clean and nice. Simple interface. Just type the text out and be done with it. The settings dialogue is also simplicity in itself. Just font ,font-color, spelling , Encoding, word wrap. thats it. Nothing else . Aah yes the most important thing, input method switching. I need to type in Malayalam also.Lets just say that if this was a windows app, then this would be the best notepad replacement.

Next up is kate . The text editor . Syntax highlighting. Multi document editing. Sessions. You know the whole works. kate was a wimpy text editor that grew up to be one of the best around. Comparable to tools like ultra edit , this is the most powerful text editor I have tried on a GNU system. Going through a feature by feature description of kate will require more time space and words. I'd say that if you wanted a feature , its most probably there in kate. Anyone editing a few C++ files or some html will be quiet comfy with kate. As a matter of fact, i just described two things i do with kate :)

That about does it. Those are two KDE apps that I use frequently , and with a lot of pleasure. Ciao next time with a post on Konqueror ( bows low in honor ).

ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പരിപാടിയെക്കുറിച്ചാണിത് . നമ്മള്‍ ( ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പ് - തിരുവനന്തപുരം) ആദ്യമായി മുന്‍കൈ എടുത്തു നടത്തിയ പരിപാടി നടന്നത് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് ബാര്‍ട്ടണ്‍ ഹില്‍ എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ്ങ് കോളേജില്‍ വെച്ചാണ് .

അതിനു മുന്നെ ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പ് - തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ചിലത് പറയാനുണ്ട് . ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതില്‍ കാര്യമുണ്ട്. ഇവിടെ മുന്‍പും ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട് . അവയൊക്കെ പല കാരണങ്ങളാല്‍ നിന്നു പോയി എന്നതില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ എനിക്കൊന്നുമറിയില്ല.

എന്തായാലും ഇപ്പോ ഉള്ള കൂട്ടായ്മ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത് 2007 ഒക്ടോബറിലാണ് . പ്രതാപ് നിര്‍മ്മല്‍ ( പിവോട്ട് സിസ്റ്റംസ് , ടെക്നോപാര്‍ക് ) അതിനു കുറച്ച് ആഴ്ചകള്‍ക്ക് മുന്നെയാണ് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് വരുന്നത് . പുള്ളി ഒരു ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസര്‍ ആയതു കൊണ്ട് സ്വാഭാവികമായും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് വന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസര്‍ ഗ്രൂപ്പിനെ കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ ഒന്ന് തല്ക്കാലം ഇല്ല എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത് . "ഓഹോ ? ഇല്ലേ ? എന്നാല്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കിക്കളയാം " ഉറപ്പല്ലേ ? അദ്ദേഹം ലിനക്സ് യൂസറും പ്രോഗ്രാമറും ആണ് . എന്തേലും ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അത് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന കൂട്ടരാണ് ലിനക്സ് പ്രോഗ്രാമര്‍മ്മാര്‍. എന്തായാലും പുള്ളി അതങ്ങ് തുടങ്ങി .

പക്ഷെ പുള്ളി അതു ടെക്നോപാര്‍ക് ലിനക്സ് യൂസര്‍ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് ആയിട്ടാണ് തുടങ്ങിയത് . പൊതുജനാഭ്യര്‍ഥന പ്രകാരം അത് ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പ് - തിരുവനന്തപുരം ആയി.ആദ്യത്തെ മീറ്റിങ്ങ് പിവോട്ട് സിസ്റ്റംസിന്റെ ഓഫീസില്‍ വെച്ചു തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഞങ്ങള്‍ സ്പേസിലും , സിക്സ്വെയര്‍ ഓഫീസിലും ഒത്ത് ചേര്‍ന്നു. എല്ലാ പ്രാവശ്യവും പ്രതാപ് ഉണ്ടാരുന്നു. ആദ്യം പ്രോഗ്രാമ്മര്‍മാര്‍ മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടാരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് കോളേജ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളും സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ജീവനക്കാരും അങ്ങനെ അങ്ങനെ ആള്‍ക്കാര്‍ ചേരാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി . ഇപ്പോഴും ഞങ്ങള്‍ എണ്ണത്തില്‍ കുറച്ചാണ് . എണ്ണം എന്ന് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചത് ഗൂഗിള്‍ കൂട്ടത്തിലെ അംഗസംഖ്യ അല്ല. ഒത്തുചേരലുകളില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നവരുടെയും മെയിലിംഗ് ലിസ്റ്റില്‍ വര്‍ത്താനം പറയുന്നവരുടെയും എണ്ണമാണ്.

ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഉദ്ദേശം എന്താണെന്നോ ? വളരെ ലളിതം - സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ ആള്‍ക്കാരെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുക , അതു ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് പറ്റാവുന്ന സഹായങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുക. അതിനായി നമ്മള്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു സാധനം ഉണ്ടെന്ന് ആള്‍ക്കാരെ അറിയിക്കണ്ടെ ? അതിന് ഒരു പാടു വഴികളുണ്ട് . തല്കാലം ഞങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത് എഞ്ജിനീയറിംഗ് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളോട് സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേറിനേക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുക എന്നതാണ്. അപ്പോ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഈ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സംഘത്തോട് മാത്രം ഒരു പ്രതിപത്തി എന്നു ചോദിച്ചാല്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഈ കൂട്ടായ്മയിലുള്ളവരെക്കൊണ്ട് ഇവരെ പറഞ്ഞു മനസ്സിലാക്കിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് എളുപ്പം എന്നാണ് ഉത്തരം . ഞാന്‍ നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞില്ലേ , ആള്‍ക്കാര്‍ കുറവാണ്. ആളെണ്ണം കൂടിക്കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ നമുക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യാം. ആളെണ്ണം കൂട്ടുക എന്നതാണ് നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞ വലിയ ആ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചെറിയ കാല്‍വെയ്പ്.

ശരി. ഇനി ഇന്ന് നടന്ന പരിപാടിയെക്കുറിച്ചാകാം.ബാര്‍ട്ടണ്‍ ഹില്‍ എഞ്ജിനീയറിങ്ങ് കോളേജ് നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളില്‍ തന്നെ ഉള്ള ഒരു ഗവണ്‍മെന്റ് സ്ഥാപനമാണ്. പി എം ജി യില്‍ നിന്ന് ഏതാണ്ട് ഒന്ന് ഒന്നര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ അകലെ , ലോ കോളേജിനു അടുത്തായിട്ടു വരും. 1999 ഓഗസ്റ്റിലാണ് ഇത് പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമാരംഭിക്കുന്നത് . ഇലക്ട്രോണിക്സ് ആന്‍ഡ് കമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷന്‍ , ഇന്‍ഫര്‍മ്മേഷന്‍ ടെക്നോളജി , ഇലക്ട്രിക്കല്‍ ആന്‍ഡ് ഇലക്ട്രോണിക്സ് , മെക്കാനിക്കല്‍ - ഇത്രയും എഞ്ജിനീയറിങ്ങ് വിഭാഗങ്ങളാണ് ഇവിടെയുള്ളത്. താരതമ്യേന ചെറുതാണെങ്കിലും ഇതു സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ കോളേജായതു കൊണ്ട് ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്ന വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ പൊതുവേ സമര്‍ഥരും ചിന്തിക്കുന്നവരുമാണ് എന്നാണെന്റെ തോന്നല്‍.

ഇവിടെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രഞ്ജിത് സാര്‍ ഗ്നു ലിനക്സ് യൂസേഴ്സ് ഗ്രൂപ്പിലെ ഒരു അംഗമാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ താല്പര്യവും ശ്രമവും കൊണ്ട് മാത്രമാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു പരിപാടി അവിടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞത്. ഒരു പ്രസന്റേഷന്‍ നടത്താന്‍ വകുപ്പുണ്ടെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ മുതല്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ എന്താണ് പറയേണ്ടത് എന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ചുഴിഞ്ഞാലോചിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. മെയിലിങ്ങ് ലിസ്റ്റ് വഴി ഉള്ള ചര്‍ച്ചയുടെ ഫലമായി ഒരു ഏകദേശരൂപം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ഇന്ന് അത് നേരില്‍ കണ്ടപ്പൊഴാണ് അതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകതയും അതിന്റെ ആകെ മൊത്തം ഉള്ള ഫലവും ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പിടികിട്ടിയത് . എന്തായാലും ഇന്നത്തെ എന്റെ ദിവസം ഇങ്ങനെയായിരുന്നു.

രാവിലെ 10:30 ക്ക് : Zyxware ഓഫീസില്‍ തല കാണിക്കല്‍ . ജോജുവിനെയും കൂട്ടി ഒരു പതിനൊന്നര ആകാറായപ്പോള്‍ അവിടെ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങി. അപ്പോഴേക്കും രാജീവും മാനുവലും
ചന്ദ്രേട്ടനും അവിടെ ( ബാര്‍ട്ടണ്‍ ഹില്ലില്‍ ) എത്തിക്കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

11:45 : ബാര്‍ട്ടണ്‍ ഹില്ലില്‍ ജോജുവുമൊത്ത് രഞ്ജിത് സാറിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ച് കോളെജില്‍ ചുറ്റിത്തിരിയല്‍ ( വായിനോട്ടമോ ? ഏയ് !)

11:55 : അനൂപ് ജോണും വിമലും എത്തുന്നു, രഞ്ജിത് സാറിനെ വിളിക്കുന്നു, സാറിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നു അപ്പൊഴേക്കും സൂരജ് (സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് കോ ഓര്‍ഡിനേറ്റര്‍) ഞങ്ങളെ തപ്പി വരുന്നു, ആകെ ബഹളം. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ അനൂപ് ജേക്കബും അര്‍ജ്ജുനും എത്തി. എന്നാപ്പിന്നെ അങ്ങട് പോവ്വല്ലേ എന്നു ചോദിച്ച് പ്രസന്റേഷന്‍ എടുക്കേണ്ട ഹാളില്‍ ചെന്നപ്പോ അവിടെ വേറെ ഒരു കുലുമാല് നടന്നീണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.അപ്പൊ ഉള്ളില്‍ കേറി അതു അലമ്പാക്കാം എന്നു കരുതി ഒരു സൈഡ് വാരം അലമ്പ് തുടങ്ങിയപ്പൊ പ്രതാപ് ദ ഗ്രേറ്റിന്റെ ഫോണ്‍ വന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം കോളേജിന്റെ മുന്നില്‍ ആകെ കണ്‍ഫ്യൂഷനില്‍ നില്കുകയാണത്രെ. കണ്‍ഫ്യൂഷന്‍ എന്റെ ഒരു 'സ്പെഷ്യാലിറ്റി' ആയോണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ പോയി പുള്ളിയെ വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വന്നപ്പോഴേക്കും അകത്ത് നടന്നോണ്ടിരുന്ന സെറ്റപ്പ് തീര്‍ന്നു എന്നു അനൗണ്‍സ്മെന്റ് കേട്ടു. അപ്പോ എന്നാ പരിപാടി തുടങ്ങുകയല്ലെ എന്ന ഭാവത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളെ കേറി. ആകെ മൊത്തം ഒരു മൊട ലൈനില്‍ തന്നെ.പരിപാടി ശടേ എന്നങ്ങ് തുടങ്ങുകേം ചെയ്തു. ഇതിന്റയില്‍ ലാപ്ടോപ്പ് കോണ്ട് ഡെമോ , ക്യാമറ കൊണ്ട് ഡെമോ ഒക്കെ നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ;)

വിമലാണ് ആദ്യത്തെ 'ടോക്ക്' നടത്തിയത്. സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ എന്താണ് , ഒരു സോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെടണമെങ്കില്‍ എന്തൊക്കെ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങള്‍ പാലിക്കണം എന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചൊക്കെ വിമല്‍ സംസാരിച്ചു. വിവിധ ലൈസന്‍സുകളെ പറ്റിയും , ഗ്നു പ്രോജക്റ്റിന്റെ പിറവിയേയും ഉദ്ദേശത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പുള്ളി പറഞ്ഞു. ലിനക്സ് കെര്‍ണല്‍ എങ്ങനെ ഗ്നു വിനു ഒരു മുതല്‍കൂട്ടായി , ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഗ്നു വിന്റെയും ലിനക്സിന്റെയും സ്ഥിതി എന്താണ് എന്നും ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കിത്തന്നു.

അടുത്തതായി പ്രതാപ് ജീയും അനൂപ് ജോണും രംഗം കീഴടക്കി. സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ ഒരു കരിയര്‍ ആകുന്നതെങ്ങനെ , ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ പ്രോഗ്രാമറും സാധാരണ ഒരു സര്‍വീസ് ഇന്‍ഡസ്ട്രി പ്രോഗ്രാമറും തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം , ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ പ്രോഗ്രാമറുടെ 'ഗീക്ക് ഇമേജ്' (geek image) ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ചൊക്കെ അവര്‍ സംസാരിച്ചു.അവര്‍ വേറെ കാര്യങ്ങളും സംസാരിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഞാന്‍ ചന്ദ്രേട്ടന്റെ പ്രസന്റേഷന്‍ 'സെറ്റപ്പ്' ചെയ്യാന്‍ പോയോണ്ട് അതൊന്നും കേട്ടില്ല. ഇവര്‍ സംസാരിച്ചു തീര്‍ന്നപ്പൊഴേക്കും ചന്ദ്രേട്ടനെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരു മുഖവുരയുമില്ലാതെ അങ്ങ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

ചന്ദ്രേട്ടന്‍ ആകെ മൊത്തം ഒരു സംഭവമാണ്.വയസ്സ് 60 നോടടുത്ത്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസയോഗ്യത പത്താം തരം. വിമുക്ത ഭടന്‍ , റബ്ബര്‍ കര്‍ഷകന്‍.ഡെബിയന്‍ ലിനക്സ് യൂസര്‍ , പിന്നെ വളരെ സജീവമായ ഒരു ബ്ളോഗിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥന്‍. ഇദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ പഠനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും വിന്ഡോസ് ചരിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഒക്കെ സംസാരിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് ഡെബിയനിലെത്തിയതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും ഒരു സമ്പൂര്‍ണ്ണ സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ ഉപയോക്താവായതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുമൊക്കെ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു . ഒരു സാധാരണ കര്‍ഷകന് കംപ്യൂട്ടറും ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റും വളരെയധികം പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുന്നതെങ്ങിനെ എന്നു പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത് ഇദ്ദേഹം ഇന്ന് സ്വന്തം അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ പങ്കു വെച്ചപ്പോഴാണ്. ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റു വഴി റബ്ബര്‍ മരങ്ങളെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന രോഗങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും സംശയങ്ങള്‍ തീര്‍ക്കാനും കഴിഞ്ഞതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും , മറ്റൊരു രോഗം പുതുതായി ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ പെടുത്തിയതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും ഒക്കെ പുള്ളി പറഞ്ഞു. ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഓഫീസ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വിവരങ്ങള്‍ ക്രോഡീകരിക്കുകയും അവയെ അപഗ്രഥിക്കുകയും ഒക്കെ ചെയ്യാന്‍ തനിക്കു സാധിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. ചന്ദ്രേട്ടന്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയത് തന്നെ പോലെയുള്ള സാധാരണക്കാരായ ആള്‍ക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഉപയുക്തമായ സോഫ്റ്റ്വേറും ഹാര്‍ഡ്വേറും ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളോട് അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ്.

അപ്പൊഴേക്കും നമ്മുടെ ചുണക്കുട്ടികള്‍ , രാജീവും മാനുവേലും കോമ്പിസ് ഡെമോയുമായി റെഡി ആയിരുന്നു. അവന്മാര്‍ വിന്‍ഡോസ് വിസ്റ്റയുടെ അവകാശവാദങ്ങള്‍ എന്തൊക്കെ എന്നാണ് ആദ്യം പറഞ്ഞത് . എന്നിട്ട് സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ സമൂഹം വികസിപ്പിച്ച കോമ്പിസ് പിള്ളേര്‍ക്ക് മുന്നില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. അതിനൂതനമായി ഈ സമയത്ത് നമ്മളുടെ ഡെസ്ക്ടോപ്പും അതിനൂതനമായിരിക്കണം എന്ന വാദത്തോടെ അവര്‍ ഒരു 'ദൃശ്യവിസ്മയം' ഒരുക്കി. 5 മിനുട്ടേ കിട്ടിയുള്ളുവെങ്കിലും കോമ്പിസിന്റെ മാസ്മരികതയും അതിന്റെ ഹാര്‍ഡ്വേര്‍ ആവശ്യകത മറ്റ് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ്ങ് സിസ്റ്റങ്ങളിലുള്ള ഗ്രാഫിക് സബ് സിസ്റ്റങ്ങളിലേതിനേക്കാളും കുറവാണ് എന്നുള്ളതും ഒക്കെ അവര്‍ ഭംഗിയായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

Contribute എന്ന വാക്കും സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്റ്റ്വേറിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് ആ വാക്കിനുള്ള പ്രാധാന്യവും എന്തെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിക്കൊടുക്കാനായി ഞാന്‍ എടുത്ത അഞ്ചു മിനിട്ടും കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പൊ ഞങ്ങളുടെ പരിപാടി പൂര്‍ത്തിയായി. ഇനി പിള്ളേരുടെ ഫീഡ്ബാക് കിട്ടിയിട്ട് വേണം അടുത്ത തവണ വരുത്തേണ്ട , മാറ്റങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് തീരുമാനിക്കാന്‍.

ഇന്ന് അവിടെ നിന്നിറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ എന്തോ നല്ല കാര്യം ചെയ്ത പോലെ ഒരു സംതൃപ്തി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. :)

A Short account of SMC meet at Trivandrum on 9th Jan 2008

The meeting was scheduled to start at 10:00. I arrived at SPACE by around 9:45. Vimal and George were there to greet me . A few minutes later Gnoop came in , followed by Maxin . Maxin went around the city looking for the SPACE building it seems. Anyways , we decided to get on with our program at 10 O clock even though only four were there. SPACE has another building some 50 m away , which offers computers and internet for visually impaired.

We were about to get started on the KDE translations when we were interrupted by the arrival of Chandrettan and Uncle. We greeted them and was about to explain our agenda when Sebin and Sivakumar sir came in.So we started a round of introduction . Aadarsh arrived half way through. Shamsudeen sir and Joju (Zyxware) arrived after the intro's were finished.

After the round of intro's Vimal started introducing Free Software . He talked about the four criteria that a software has to satisfy in order to qualify as a Free Software . Maxin explained the different economic models that can be used make money off free software - Redhat and Asterisk were pointed out as examples. Vimal went on to give an introduction to what Malayalam computing actually is. After that , Anoop introduced SMC and its current work. He explained about GNOME Malayalam and its current state . Maxin elaborated on the need to bring Malayalam to KDE also.

By then everyone wanted to know why free software is important in education Isn't enforcing Free Software in schools a discrimination against other companies and not providing a level playing ground for everyone ? Vimal countered it with the sharing aspect of Free Software . Also the freedom to modify it to our needs was pointed out - the Pango patch that Suresh wrote is an example of how we can modify Free Software for our own needs.

Sebin pointed out that not everyone becomes a programmer. People grow up to become writers , journalists, accountants etc. The lack of professional packages like Pagemaker/Quark Express and Photoshop was emphasized . And children not learning to use Windows in schools implies that they will have difficulty in professional packages that are available only on Windows . But Anoop and Vimal made it clear that children are being taught to use a "Word processor" or an "Image Editor" and not specific programs. They are getting accustomed to the "Desktop" paradigm and not a particular GUI. When they grow up they will be able to figure out things on their own , be it on Windows or a GNU/Linux desktop. I also mentioned the wine project when Sebin wished for availability of Photoshop and the like on a GNU/Linux desktop.

Sebin , Uncle and Aadarsh made a case for simpler words when it comes to translating the UI's . Everyone wanted simpler words. Uncle and Sebin pointed out that Malayalam has its roots in Tamil and that referring Tamil equivalents while translating the UI is a very good idea. Maxin also said that while translating , if he is unable to find a Malayalam word, he often consults Tamil translations.

Aadarsh wants SMC to go to colleges - well not just SMC , the whole Free software movement . He wants something equivalent to IT@School in colleges. We pointed out to him that students are generally not willing to take up Open source projects , and that generally the students create a standalone program that does some particular function and is complete in itself . eg: an accounting package or a Library Management System. They are unwilling to take up fixing a bug in projects like KDE/GNOME etc because those are mostly not accepted by their project guides as an academic project. Vimal told us about initial efforts by SPACE to initiate something like this and how the whole thing didn't work out . Aadarsh suggested educating the teachers about GNU and the excellent programming platform GNU/Linux is. He offered his support and efforts in this direction.

After this and some more discussion ( Anoop please fill in the details for me, I know that something is missing but I can't bring myself to remember it ) we went on to translations. We opened a PO file in GEdit and showed the rest how we translate a file. Uncle was impressed and he said that it was easier than he thought. He had to leave by then , so we all stood in for a photograph. When i pulled out my S3IS , Sebin casually opened his bag took out a Canon EOS ( I am guessing that its a Rebel XT ) . He went on to take photographs.

After that we transferred the photos to one of the SPACE computers and those who had thumb drives took a copy with them. Chandrettan was interested in using GIMP and Maxin explained a bit about it.

Aadarsh was wonderstruck when he showed him a webpage in firefox . It seems he had underestimated the capabilities of a GNU/Linux system when it comes to malayalam.

Anyways people started leaving and only Maxin , Gnoop , Vimal and me were left. We went and had lunch and then to SPACE and got GPLv3 shirts and FSF India kurthas ;) . After that we started translating a really big file (KDElibs4.po) . We managed to do some work and before we knew it it was 5 O Clock ( Vimal had left after 4:30 ) and Maxin had to leave. So Gnoop gave me company till 5:45 , and then i also had to leave. So we locked the building , gave the key back to SPACE and left.


The meeting gave me a boost and a sense of urgency - we have to work hard if we have to put Malayalam into KDE also. I am happy that i met all these people from different wakes of life - all empowered by GNU/Linux. When I started using GNU/Linux in 2000 , I never dreamed that i would sit here and be able to contribute something back to it.


[ On a side note , Uncle lives about a 5 minute walk away from my home. >:) I am going to liberate his computer ASAP :D ] .

The city that lives.

My friendship with the city began when i was in 5th standard. I had to go to the city to attend school . There was no school bus etc - well my parents didn't avail the facility that's all. I had to take the KSRTC bus get down at Vellayambalam , the ticket was 50ps or 70 ps i don't remember.

It was fun those days. I had 1.5 rupees reserve money in case of emergencies . 1.5 Rupees !! :)) and it was enough . Well sometimes the reserve money went to buying sip ups or candies . Anyways my fifth standard year was the time when the city started talking to me. It told me about how all of its roads were interconnected. Sometimes it would urge me to walk down some strange path just to see where I'd emerge. I was never surprised. The city always told me where i would end up beforehand.

Then my school moved to near my home. It was a 5 -10 minutes walk. So until i got to Xth standard , the city was largely out of the picture.

Then i had tuition s. I sometimes had to get down at Vellayambalam and walk or catch another bus to Peroorkada . Sometimes I had to come to Vellayambalam to get back home. Plus I got to go on my cycle on weekends. Weekends were when the city spoke again. I'd hurtle through unknown lanes , to emerge triumphantly at Vazhuthacad or Edapazhinji or Jawahar nagar or Kaudiar just i had calculated. By then I assumed that it was my uncanny sense of direction that was letting me take those random turns and emerge wherever I want. I'd largely forgotten about the city by then.

Then I was in 12th , tuitions were still there but the detours were gone. It was a mad rush from home to school to tuition. The city became an irritating place which i had to navigate like a difficult level in Prince of Persia. :) Sometimes I cursed the buses that were never on time and the city that made them late.

Then when the exams were over, I began to go about again. On my cycle. The detours returned. But now I was looking for the longest route home so I could cycle through the city , watching all the people on their journeys , people madly rushing about. Finding the roads with the least traffic became an obsession. After the daily C Programming class, I'd cycle all over the city , with the burning sun on my back, my shirt drenched in sweat . It was fun. I cycled a lot during that time. It was the time when i really appreciated owning a bicycle and living in a city where traffic was next to nothing at noon , in the sweltering heat. I talked to the city. I told it about how i was going to write the best tic tact toe program ever . It told me about where to stop for a drink of water when i was tired. It led me through a maze of roads that connected all the junctions i ever wanted to go. I'd cycle along idly, watching people. Sometimes looking at the girls . The city used to smile then.

Then came college. The city again became a lake filled with weeds and plants that i had to navigate and push through. I started hating the buses again. It was as if every moment spent inside the city was a moment lost from my life.

Then came the time that drummed into my head the fact that the city was an inseparable, intimate part of me. I got a job at Kochi. A city that didn't trust you and you hesitate to trust. I tried to talk to it during the lazy Saturday afternoons and evenings i spent there. It kept questioning me. It made me feel as if i would never belong there. It told me that it would never be able to adopt me - I didn't belong there. That i would always be an outsider, but it promised me that i wont get lost in it ever. So i began taking long walks, sometimes sitting on the Marine Drive with a book , half the time looking up from the book to see what the people were doing. Sometimes taking long walks that would invariably end up at Kaloor somehow.

I'd come home every fortnight. And every time I put my foot down on the railway platform , some kind of heady energy rushed up through my feet. I'd walk , I'd run . It was like i was enjoying every bit of my city. I liked those cold nights. And then one fine evening after seven months of separation from my city , i got a call back , i can now be home - i got a job at Technopark.

I came back. But then things became blurred. The travel to work involved either getting on the company van , or going off on the Kinetic Honda and later Unicorn , navigating the traffic, cursing the people who jumped across you , who cut you off during the calculated overtaking maneuvers. People didn't matter now . It was always the 'way' - The Right Way . Always finding the best route . The city spoke to me again . It secretly helped me along . It showed me patterns in the traffic. I only have to look at the traffic and I'd immediately know the best path- not the shortest , but the best . Nobody cut me off after the city started speaking to me again.

Then i was sent off to see a city that spoke a different language. Of orderliness and courtesy. A city on a river bank with bridges crisscrossing it.It said that it was nicer than my city that "Look ! There is snow here ! There is no blistering heat , and the people are always courteous and will help you navigate. There are places you can go sit and read a book quietly . You can take a walk safely on the sidewalk . The traffic is not mad ". I would have accepted it . But i missed the people.

I pined for my city. I dreamed about it . I came back after two months. I almost cried when i set foot back inside my city. And the city welcomed me back with a warm summer.

Then it was back to the daily dash to work and all the monotony .

So it was for a long time. A walk , all alone through the city was a forgotten thing, until about a week ago. I had to walk again . A short ten minute walk. The city whispered to me - "Look ! the people ! look at them ! " . The people had changed. It was like i was walking in an altogether different place. But the city's gentle voice reassured me - It was only the people that has changed . It told me that the girls who'd walk by with heads down, giggling among themselves had grown into women who'd take off on their Activas and Marutis . That the boys have all grown up and became people who celebrate each weekend as if it were the last. The people are now rushing about to 'enjoy' life instead of moving about at a leisurely pace. That there are a lot of people in the city now. A lot more.

So I was waiting for a bus again , no longer mad at the city for making the buses late. The city sent a gentle wind through that calm nice evening . It told me that it was fading, that it was going away , and that another is taking its place. But it said that it would keep in touch until it was gone completely and introduce me to the new one taking its place before it left. I said adieu and smiled. I looked up and saw a boy in a white shirt and black pants, riding a bicycle , smiling to himself and disappearing into a by lane. Suddenly , growing up seemed the stupidest decision i ever took. I sighed, got on a very crowded bus and got back home. I had pleasant dreams that night.
